Gail Faulkner: A Lasting Impression

The Santa Paula Art Museum presents “Gail Faulkner: A Lasting Impression.” The retrospective exhibition honors the life and work of Ventura artist Gail Faulkner (1947–2023). Born in New Jersey in 1947, Faulkner couldn’t remember a time in her life when she wasn’t drawing, painting, or creating something. At the urging of her parents, however, Faulkner initially pursued a career in science, working as an X-ray technician in special procedures for 17 years while continuing to practice art in her free time.

Looking for a change in her 30s, Faulkner studied fine and commercial art at the Philadelphia College of Art. She moved to California in 1981, continued her art studies at UCLA, and began a successful second career as a graphic designer.

In 2003, Faulkner took a watercolor painting workshop and devoted herself to the medium for the final two decades of her life. Inspired by the meticulous realism of the Dutch Masters, Faulkner developed a highly detailed approach to watercolor – a medium that leaves little room for error. She once remarked: “I like detailed subjects. If there’s one part I think will be more challenging, I always start with that.”

Faulkner was a familiar presence in Santa Paula, where her paintings were often featured in the annual Santa Paula Art Show, and the Santa Paula Art Museum’s annual “Art About Agriculture” exhibition. With the help of Gail’s husband, Bill Faulkner, the Museum has brought together nearly 30 of her exquisitely rendered watercolor paintings from private collections, offering a rare opportunity to experience the artist’s extraordinary skill and the joy she brought to painting. The exhibition will be on view through January 10, 2027. Santa Paula Art Museum is located at 117 and 123 N 10th Street in historic downtown Santa Paula. www.santapaulaartmuseum.org.
