Discover Unlimited Creative Opportunities at CAPS

Interested in learning how CAPS can help you Unleash Your Creativity? Join them on the first Monday of each month for a CAPS Orientation led by Donald McConnell, Operations Manager. The next session is Monday, November 3 at 6pm.

The informal orientation features a tour of the CAPS Media Center including the soundstage, radio station, podcast booth, edit bays, classroom/meeting room and information on membership and programming. The 30–40-minute session also includes an introduction to the production and editing training available for members directed by CAPS crew members including camera, video editing, full 3 camera studio production, radio, and podcast production. Plus, guests will review all the CAPS gear that is available for members to use at no cost to create their own productions, including cameras, tripods, sound gear, editing computers and more.

CAPS Membership is available to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Ventura. The CAPS Creative Community includes families, teenagers, young adults, mid-career professionals, educators, storytellers, retirees, and more. Plus, nonprofits, faith-based groups and community service organizations throughout Ventura County can become CAPS Members. The CAPS orientation sessions are held on the first Monday of every month at 6pm. Register online at https://capsmedia.org/classes.

KPPQ radio and podcast producers held their latest Producers Forum, hosted by producer Nadin Piche, featuring speakers who covered the latest in FCC regulations and held a workshop on storytelling. Regular orientations are held the first Thursday of the month. Reserve your spot for the next one on November 6.

In this edition, the CAPS Staff Spotlight falls on Phil Taggart, Mentor, Producer and Educator at CAPS. Phil has been a consistent creative talent in the Ventura community for decades and a guiding light at CAPS for more than ten years.

Every Friday afternoon Phil passes along his knowledge and passion for media production to high school students when the CAPS Media Center becomes a “creative classroom” for the award-winning high school students in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program known as ECTV, developed by CAPS in collaboration with the Ventura Unified School District (VUSD).

And on many Tuesday evenings, Phil transforms the CAPS Media Center into a refuge for the Arts in Exile, as a creative community of performers, musicians, film makers, poets, storytellers, and others gather at CAPS to produce their original productions on the CAPS soundstage.

“I’m one of the Artists in Exile on Tuesdays when I get to collaborate with talented artists from throughout the county. And, through ECTV, I am fortunate to teach the next generation of storytellers, guiding them to write, direct, record, and edit their own nationally recognized and award-winning radio and TV shows. Through this unique educational program, students get real world experience and hands-on training in all the aspects of media production. Over the past ten years I have had the pleasure of working with dozens of extremely talented young people in the ECTV program at CAPS.”

There’s much more to share about CAPS Media resources, training, classes, programs, KPPQ radio, and other opportunities. To register for the free monthly orientation or learn more about CAPS go to capsmedia.org.
