City Update – Is Downtown Main Street Opening?

From the City of Ventura:

Main Street Moves: What You Need to Know

We’ve received a lot of questions about the current status of the Main Street and California Street closures. We recognize that there are many perspectives and ideas, and we want to clarify the facts.

Here’s a quick update:

  • Is Main Street Moves reopening to cars?
    • No final decision has been made yet. The City Council will meet on September 16, 2025, to discuss the possibility of keeping it closed or reopening it.
  • What closure options have been considered?
    • There have been two: 1) California Vehicle Code Section 21101(a)(1) and 2) The Pedestrian Mall.
  • What about the Vehicle Code closure?
    • The Vehicle Code remains in effect, but a pending lawsuit may impact its long-term use. It’s the current legal basis for the closure.
  • What happened with the Pedestrian Mall process?
    • Due to objections from property owners, the City Council adopted a motion to terminate the Pedestrian Mall Law process on July 8, 2025.
  • What does this mean for parklet businesses?
    • City staff is preparing for both outcomes, including parklet removal plans and updated design & permitting standards.
