Oct.13: Haunted Ventura 2-4p.m. All ages lecture and walking tour of the many haunted places in Old Ventura. Oct.16: 8:30-10:30 a.m. Fall Migration Bird Walk, hosted by the Nature Conservancy.  Fall migration is starting as the weather changes and the birds have started to move through the area.  Bring binoculars and wear comfortable walking shoes. Oct.18: To celebrate the June 2018 publication of Santa Barbara author Daniel Thomas’s first collection of poems, “Deep Pockets,” Thomas will read his poetry on Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Topping Room at the E.P. Foster Public Library. The reading is hosted by Phil Taggart as part of the weekly poetry series at the library. “Deep Pockets” is available for pre-order at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and copies are available now at Chaucer’s.

Oct. 21: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, at the Campus Student Center of Ventura College. At noon and at 11 a.m. there will be an informal workshop and a mart where items will be for sale followed by lunch and an informational meeting and a program at 1 p.m. members will bring watches, clocks & tools for sale. Oct. 27, 28: Ventura Jubilee Fellowship is hosting a Bible Conference featuring Dr. Robert Morgan as guest speaker. Opera Santa Barbara will return to the Ojai Library to present a Free Noontime Opera Concert on Thursday, October 11. The concert will begin at 12 p.m. in the main room of the library and will last approximately 45 minutes.

Professor of Mathematics Jason Miller will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, to deliver a presentation titled “Bats of the Channel Islands: Using Mathematics to Protect our Elusive Nocturnal Neighbor.” Miller comes from CSU Channel Islands (CI) as part of this season’s CI Library Lecture Series.

Friends of the Ojai Libraries invite you to their Annual Ojai Day Weekend book sale to be held in the parking lot of the Ojai Library on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hundreds of books featuring an assortment of hardback and paperback fiction and non-fiction will be on sale. Villanova Preparatory School is honored to host Father Gregory Boyle, Jesuit priest, best-selling author, and founder of Homeboy Industries on Tuesday, October 2. Fr. Boyle’s transformational work in building the world’s largest and most successful gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program continues to serve as a social model of hope and healing.

California Coastal Horse Rescue (CCHR) in Ojai, will host its Annual Octoberfest Saturday, October 13, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Ranch at 600 West Lomita Ave.

The community is invited to this event, which includes a beer and wine garden, live music, SoCal Comfort Food Truck, games and activities for children, and, of course, the stars of the day – the CCHR horses.

An all-volunteer, non-profit organization, CCHR’s mission is to rescue abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses and provide them with a second chance at living healthy, happy and productive lives. The cost for this event is $10 per person. Kids under 6 are free

On Monday, October 29, the Ojai Art Center Literary Branch welcomes David Mellon who will talk about his transition from painting to writing, how he got his novel published, as well as doing a reading from that novel. The Literary Salon begins at 7:00 PM in the Ojai Art Center Gallery and will be followed by a reception and book signing.

It was when he discovered the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program that his literary aspirations were ignited.  His first book, Silent, was nominated for the 2016 Allegra Johnson Prize


The public is welcomed on October 29, 7:00 p.m. in the Ojai Art Center Gallery for David Mellon’s talk followed by a reception and book signing. $5 donation at the door.

Sept. 14: Land & Sea Food Truck Feast Friday from 4-7 p.m. Located at the Leo Robbins Community Sailing Center Marina Park. Bring family and friends to Marina Park for a free picnic-style gathering. Take a family sailboat ride, 2-4 members with a center instructor for $10 and learn more about what the City of Ventura’s local sailing center has to offer you. Food trucks, kids’ activities, and more will be on hand to round out the evening.

Sept.15: The Los Padres Ski and Social Club will be participating in the Coastal Clean-up day on Saturday, from 9 am to noon. Meet at the entrance to Marina Park, on the corner of Pierpont and Greenock Lane. Join in on this worldwide coastal clean-up event and, in doing so, get to know some of the LPSC members. You might just decide to become a member yourself. Look for members wearing their black LPSC shirts.

The Channel Islands Bike Club is Ventura County’s largest recreational road cycling club. They are working to make Ventura County a bicycling destination and to share the benefits of bicycling for health, recreation, sport, and transportation. Both beginners and experts are welcome.

Sept.30: The Herb Walks with Lanny Kaufer program will visit Reyes Peak on the scenic Pine Mountain ridge on Sunday, for the annual Fall Equinox Nature Hike. Attendees will experience some of the most spectacular scenery and natural habitat that Ventura County has to offer. At 9 a.m. with a carpool caravan of about 35 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza, (1201 Maricopa Highway, Ojai to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The group will hike into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead at 7000 feet elevation, stop for lunch (not provided) among the Jeffrey Pines, and return to the trailhead by 3:30 p.m., arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by 4 p.m.

This intermediate level hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. The total hiking distance will be about 3 miles. $25 for adults or $20 for seniors 62-up and students 13-18 years of age. Kids 5-12 can go free, one per adult, by prior arrangement. The Ojai Photo Club will feature photographer and educator Tim Meyer as its presenter for August. The free event, “A Brief History of Portraiture,” will be held on August 21 at 7 p.m. in Help of Ojai’s Kent Hall, 111 W. Santa Ana St..

Meyer will offer a fast-paced journey through the history of portraiture, spanning more than two millennia and including a wide variety of art media. With a lifetime of experience in photographic portraiture, he will discuss different artistic approaches to creating portraits, from 600 BC to the present. He will illustrate how these styles have influenced human portrayal and how they continue to have an impact on contemporary photography.

August 16: East Ventura Community Council. Mark Toohey, Southern California representative for the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) will speak on “Preparing for California’s Next Big Earthquake.” His presentation will include information on the likelihood of a major earthquake occurring.

Former Ventura City Councilmember Jim Friedman and current Councilmember Erik Nasarenko will be introduced as candidates running to represent new City Council Districts in November.

In addition, a member of the Ventura Police Department will report on crime and safety.

The council represents those who live east of Victoria Avenue

August 16, 17, 18 and August 23, 24, 25.: Fractured Actors proudly presents The Speakeasy Project, a comedic and provocative evening of world premiere theater and live music, directed by Shannon McNally Ham. Step into Sweet Jay’s, a Prohibition-era lounge, for bold new one-acts by Los Angeles playwright and theater critic Jason Rohrer. A ragtag crew of witty mobsters, government officials, talking animals and the first all-female voyage into space are accompanied by a world class band of Ventura County musicians, including Shelby Figueroa and James Dorward, performing modern pop songs with a cool jazzy twist.

August 17, 9-11am. Birds and Beach nature walk at Ormond Beach hosted by The Nature Conservancy. Come and join in for this free nature walk. Will be exploring the area around the seasonal wetland to the beach looking for treasures along the way. The walk is fairly level (except walking in the sand) and roughly 1 1/2 miles. August 19: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road.

The regular meeting starts at noon and at 11:00 there will be an informal workshop where a topic on clocks or watches will be demonstrated and discussed. There will be a mart where items will be for sale followed by lunch and an informational meeting and a program at 1:00 pm.

The program this month will be a presentation by Dave Coatsworth on “Collecting American Pocket Watches”. Dave is a nationally recognized collector of American pocket watches and is the moderator of the American Pocket Watch section of the NAWCC Message Board.

Anyone interested in watches and clocks, (modern & antique) is invited to visit and join the chapter. There is a $3 admission charge. Lunch is available for $5 more. Watches, clocks & tools will be on display and for sale.

August 22: “The College Area Community Council will meet on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. Representatives from Ventura College, including the new interim president, will make a presentation. In addition, Jennifer Harkey, Program Administrator with the Continuum of Care Alliance, will describe the many nonprofits devoted to reducing homelessness. August 28, 8:30-10:30am. Adaptations and survival along the Santa Clara River hosted by The Nature Conservancy. A free hike along the Santa Clara River Will discover how the plants and animals adapt or die in this dynamic, harsh landscape. The walk is 1 1/2 – 2 miles over varying terrain
