Wendy began her career at age 10, as a ballerina with The Bolshoi Ballet and later performed on Broadway and in London, England. Ojai author Elizabeth Rose will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019, to deliver a presentation of her new book From The Fire which reflects on the Thomas Fire, co-authored with Deva Temple.

From The Fire is a book about hope and connection and the coming together of the Ojai community as well as a book about the devastation and trauma of the Thomas Fire. This book is a collection of photographs, writings, art, and reflection—entirely from members of the Ojai Community—that document the fire experience from the flames into the ashes to the regrowth on our land as well as within the community.

Elizabeth Rose will discuss the making of this book—from the interviews with over 45 community members to the process of culling through over 900 photograph submissions to sharing her experience meeting with so many Ojai community members.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Ojai Women’s Fund (OWF) proudly names the 13 organizations selected to receive $105,000 in 2018 community grant awards, which honor and support Ojai Valley nonprofits that serve local arts, education, environment, health, and social service projects. All funds were raised this year through OWF member donations and a Wilson Family Fund grant from the Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF).

Ojai has been threatened by wildfires many times over the past century. Several were the largest wildfire in California history. The newest exhibition at the Ojai Valley Museum examines the Thomas Fire and other fires that impacted the valley.

The museum is housed in the former St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church. The original church on the site burnt in a 1917 wildfire. It, and other fires, give historical context to the Thomas Fire which began in Upper Ojai last December.

The December one-year anniversary of the Thomas Fire will no doubt be an important touchstone for everyone who lives in the valley. The free exhibition runs through January 27, 2019.

The Ojai Valley Museum is located at 130 W. Ojai Ave. Free parking is available behind the museum, off Blanche Street.

The holidays are on the way, which means that Santa Paws is coming to town! The Humane Society of Ventura County’s annual two-day holiday photo-shoot event will take place on Sundays, Dec. 2, at the HSVC’s shelter in Ojai, at 402 Bryant St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Adults, children and pets are welcome to pose in photos with or without Santa. The shelter will have festive costumes available for attendees’ pets. Pocket pets, reptiles, rabbits and birds are all welcome!

In addition, during the Dec. 2 event, the HSVC will host its annual bake sale and Firefly Ceramics will once again be on hand with its special Tiles for Tails program. For a $25 donation benefiting the HSVC, attendees can design their own tile that will be permanently displayed on-site at the nonprofit shelter.

The main event both days will be the photo sessions, which include five to 10 images and start at $30.

Santa Paws is the HSVC’s largest community event of the year, bringing in some 300 families. All proceeds go directly toward the daily operations at the shelter.

Nov.15: East Ventura Community Council meeting a representative from Ashdon Development will present an update on the types of stores being proposed for the 4.7-acre parcel on the southeast corner of Darling and Wells Road. The Ojai Holiday Home Tour & Marketplace kicks off the holiday season on November 10 and November 11, 10am to 4pm. Presented by the Ojai Festival Women’s Committee, this treasured tradition highlights the diverse neighborhoods of the Ojai Valley by featuring four distinctive Ojai homes adorned with floral inspirations by designers.

Entering its 22nd year, the tour benefits the Ojai Music Festival and its BRAVO education and community program, which offers free music workshops to the Ojai Valley public schools.

Also taking place the same weekend is the Holiday Marketplace held at Thomas Aquinas Church Hall. This companion event will feature a collection of curated lifestyle and fashion items from more than 40 vendors. Admission is free and open to the public.

Ojai Herbal Symposium on “Natural Resilience” will be going on in the Krotona Hall and various downtown locations, from November 16th to the 18th. The Ojai Film Festival annually honors an actor and a cinematographer for a lifetime of outstanding works. The Lifetime Achievement Award for Acting goes to Ojai local Malcolm McDowell who is recognized for his six-decades of cutting-edge work.
This year’s recipient for the Lifetime Achievement in Cinematography goes to one of the first women members of the American Society of Cinematographers, Ellen Kuras, ASC, widely regarded as a pioneer for all filmmakers.

The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts will present BeatoFest, on Saturday, November 10th. Alex Murad, director of animal welfare at Rancho Grande, announced the formation of the Rancho Grande Scholarship Fund on Behalf of Animals. The fund will provide an annual award of $5,000 in tuition assistance or other school expenses to the winner of a 500-word essay on the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of animals.

The first award will be made in August 2019 for the 2019-20 school year. In its first year, the award will be restricted to students attending the Besant Hill School because of its small size, well-rounded and well–respected reputation, and its willingness to create opportunities for all of its. In future years, the program may be expanded to other private high schools in Ojai. Applications are due no later than July 1, 2019 and can be emailed to[email protected].

The winning applicant’s essay will explain the writer’s thoughts on animal care and describe what enhancing the wellbeing of animals means to them.

The international board of directors and officers of Lions Clubs International (LCI) will be meeting in Ojai from October 11-17th to discuss global vision issues and a new campaign to fight adult diabetes which often leads to vision problems. They will be led by Mrs. Gudrun Ingvadottir from Iceland who is the first female international president in the 101 year history of the organization. The event is jointly hosted by the Ventura Downtown and Ojai Valley lions clubs at the Ojai Valley Inn. Local clubs along with a matching grant from LCI have recently raised $200,000 to establish an adult diabetes center in Oxnard.
