Ventura County Ombudsman Celebrates 45 Years of Advocacy

By Carol Leish, MA –

On Nov. 5, 2026, Ombudsman Long-Term Care Services of Ventura County will celebrate 45 years of advocating for the rights, dignity and quality of life of residents in long-term care facilities throughout the county.

The anniversary celebration will recognize the people and community partners who have helped shape the organization’s work while highlighting the ongoing need for long-term care advocacy.

The Ventura County Ombudsman Program works to ensure that older adults and people with disabilities living in long-term care facilities receive quality care and are treated with dignity. Ombudsmen advocate for residents who may be unable to speak up for themselves, helping address concerns and improve their quality of life.

“For 45 years, our organization has been fortunate to have been a part of the lives of so many residents and their families,” said Executive Director Sarah Abrams. “This milestone is an opportunity to celebrate our history, recognize the people who have made the work possible, and to look ahead to the future.”

The Nov. 5 event will feature presentations by leaders in long-term care advocacy. Tony Chicotel, senior staff attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), will present “Improving Long-Term Care: What Works, What Doesn’t, and Where Do We Go Next?” State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Fay Gordon will also participate as a special guest.

Eric Carlson, director of Justice in Aging, will present “How to Make a Difference: Thoughts on Culture and Advocacy in the Long-Term Care World,” focusing on how culture and advocacy can help bring meaningful change to the long-term care system.

As the organization marks this milestone, it remains committed to supporting residents and their families while strengthening advocacy and promoting quality care throughout Ventura County.

The invitation-only celebration will take place Nov. 5 at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach.
