In February, six employees—roughly 10% of the workforce—were let go from Channel Islands National Park.
These terminations were part of a broader workforce reduction initiated under President Donald Trump, which impacted thousands of federal employees nationwide.
On Wednesday, March 5th, hundreds of people gathered at the headquarters in the Harbor to protest the cuts and express their solidarity. A spokesperson for Channel Islands National Park emphasized, “This isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue; it’s an American issue.” He further clarified that only Congress, not the Executive branch, has the authority to cut park staff or funding. A Channel Islands marine biologist who was let go after logging 30,000 underwater minutes also shared her experience.
Vondie added, “I was deeply moved by the Chumash elder who gave the blessing at our rally. She spoke of the land as ‘Our Land,’ urging us to honor and preserve it for future generations. Her words brought me to tears. I also read on Facebook that there’s talk in Congress about potentially removing Santa Rosa Island from Channel Islands National Park. Santa Rosa is so pristine and beautiful. I’m not sure if the goal is to develop it or drill there, but these islands are an essential part of what makes Ventura so special. We’re incredibly fortunate to have them right here in our backyard.”
“That’s why we stood together in the cold rain. We’re committed to protecting Channel Islands National Park. #ProtectOurParks.”

to honor and protect it for future generations.
