By Sheldon Brown –

On January 17, the Museum of Ventura County hosted the opening of What is Beauty? Rethinking Women’s Portraiture in Art in the Wachtell Gallery. This thought-provoking exhibition features fourteen portraits by Ventura County artists, offering diverse perspectives on beauty across different eras and styles.

The showcased works, spanning from 1939 to 2011, range from detailed realism to minimalist simplicity, illustrating the evolving concept of beauty in art. Among the featured artists was Johanna Spinks, who exhibited four portraits from her Face of Ventura series, originally published in the Ventura Breeze.

Adding to the evening’s ambiance, live music was performed by musicians from the Ventura Music Festival, enhancing the celebration of art and culture.

A large crowd enjoyed the exhibit.
