The vibrant shores of Ventura came alive once again as the annual outrigger canoe races unfolded during another thrilling year. Hosted by the Hokuloa Outrigger Canoe Club, the highly anticipated Ventura Outrigger Challenge invited local paddlers and visiting SCORA (Southern California Outrigger Racing Association) teams to gather at Harbor Cove Beach, where the competition took place on a June Gloom day June 14th, against the breathtaking backdrop of the Harbor Cove Beach and the entrance to the Ventura Harbor. Teams from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, including those from Arizona and Nevada, were eager to participate, showcasing their skills and teamwork in this dynamic sport.

The Hokuloa team’s performance was commendable, as they placed 5th in the Open UL race and achieved 2nd in the Co-ed Masters category. Competing boats such as the Lanakiku and Kullalka brought fierce competition to the races, while team PuaKea showcased their prowess with a strong showing in several heats. The Kahakai, another notable vessel, also took to the waters, adding to the excitement of the event.
Each year, this exhilarating event highlights the athleticism and dedication inherent in outrigger canoeing, drawing participants of all ages who united to demonstrate their endurance and camaraderie. With an air of anticipation, all canoes received powerful blessings from a Chumash Elder, and then – at 7:30 in the morning – the Keiki under 19 kids’ team launched into action, racing through Ventura’s Harbor with exhilarating energy. The thrill was exciting as the young paddlers propelled their canoes forward, ready to make their mark on the waters! The atmosphere was electric, filled with cheers from parents and spectators and the rhythmic sounds of paddles splashing against the water as teams raced toward the finish line, all amidst the vibrant cultural festivities.
