Haole’s Rock Garden Turns 4: A Tribute of Love and Color at the Promenade

By Kim Murphy –

What began as a simple act of remembrance has grown into a beloved community tradition. Four years ago, on the first anniversary of Haole’s passing, two close friends and I created a small rock garden along the Ventura Promenade to honor his memory. Haole wasn’t just an incredible dog—he was a joyful presence in our community and touched many lives, especially in the special-needs world.

On May 13, Haole’s Garden will turn four years old. To mark the occasion, I’d love to see the garden filled with freshly painted rocks. If you’d like to create one in honor of a loved one—human or furry—we would be truly grateful. Some of the original rocks have naturally faded with time, but they remain part of the story. We won’t be removing them— just adding new color, love, and life to this special space.

Let’s continue to grow this tribute together, one rock at a time.
