Looking for a meaningful and adventurous day out? A trip to Santa Rosa Island, one of the hidden gems of the Channel Islands, offers breathtaking sunrises, serene sunsets, and pristine sandy beaches—a retreat that rejuvenates the soul.
Island Packers crew member Nick M. said it best, “People think it’s the destination, but the journey is equally magical.” On the boat ride, you may spot schools of dolphins or migrating whales—unforgettable moments that create cherished memories. Right now, humpback whales are heading south to mate, while gray whale sightings begin early in the new year.
During a recent visit to Santa Rosa Island, I explored the Cherry Canyon trail, accompanied by expert guides Michael Delaney and his wife, Jan. Their deep knowledge enriched the hike, making the 3.5-mile loop an unforgettable experience. The trail offers stunning views of white sandy beaches below and a sky filled with dreamy, fluffy clouds.
On the return trip, weather permitting, Island Packers often stops at the Painted Cave—a natural marvel that’s truly awe-inspiring.
The day’s calm seas and gentle winds added to the magic, but the real highlight for me was witnessing playful dolphins and whale calves breaching alongside their mothers during the boat ride. It was simply breathtaking!
For other adventurers, the island’s treasures vary. Eric Riggs, visiting from Newport Beach, was thrilled by his first sighting of the adorable island fox. Dana Sharp, all the way from Kotzbue, Alaska, found the coastline and wildlife to be utterly enchanting.
