Capsized Commercial Fishing Vessel With 4 Crew Members Rescued Off Ventura Harbor

By Ventura Breeze Staff –

Incident Summary:

At 9:59 am on Dec 13, the Ventura Harbor Patrol and US Coast Guard received a report of a capsized commercial fishing vessel just outside the Harbor Entrance.  Harbor Patrol Officers responded immediately and were on scene within 2 minutes and found a larger commercial fishing vessel “Net Effect” with four crew members actively being rescued by a nearby vessel.  The Harbor Patrol brought four of the victims aboard the Harbor Patrol vessel, provided medical aid, and notified Ventura County Fire Dispatch requesting Paramedics respond to the Harbor Patrol Office.  The victims were transported to the Harbor Patrol dock and turned over to Paramedics with AMR.  Two of the four crew members were transported to the local hospital by Paramedics for further evaluation.  The other two were non-injured and released on scene.

Multiple Agencies are currently involved in the post-accident handling of the capsized vessel.  The accident occurred outside the Harbor and Port District Boundaries.  The US Coast Guard is the lead agency and will be coordinating the priority handling of removing the fuel from the vessel.  Additionally, they will evaluate the options of salvaging the vessel.  Tow Boat US is currently overseeing the immediate stabilization and towing away from the Harbor to prevent any hazards to everyday navigation.  The vessel is currently ¾ mile off Ventura Harbor and is no longer in the danger of sinking in the Harbor Entrance.

Other agencies that responded included the American Medical Response Paramedics, Ventura City Fire Paramedics, Ventura County Sheriff Marine Patrol, US Coast Guard Channel Islands, and US Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment.
