Galerie102 is pleased to present “Genesis,” a two-person show featuring paintings by Stella Maria Baer and sculpture by Elisa Berry Fonseca opening Saturday, November 7th with an Artist’s Reception from 4-6 pm and on view through December 6.

“Genesis” brings together the work of two-long term friends and artistic collaborators, representing not only the trajectory of their friendship and artistic relationship, but also the subtlety and depth of their work that, when combined, creates a stunningly symbolic diorama of “the heavens and earth.”

Both Baer and Fonseca hold Master of Arts in Religion degrees from Yale

Sunset 8th grade Jonny Sinklier wins Ventura Optimist Student of the Month award! The Sunset School 8th grader is an extraordinary young man who is diligent in his studies and excels in all academic areas, but is never boastful. He is creative, articulate and adds to every conversation in a productive way. He is a quiet leader amongst his peers, not the one to “demand things,”  but rather he leads by example. The Sunset School Annual Fiesta will be held on November 6th, from 4:00- 7:30 at Sunset School.  There will be free entertainment, including Bell Arts Ballet Folklorico, Mexican Trick Roping Charreria demonstration, Mariachi music, food, game booths, and fun for the whole family!

The Ojai Valley Green Coalition will host the Focus Earth film “Racing to Zero, In Pursuit of Zero Waste” as part of the Ojai Film Festival Sunday, November 8 at the Ojai Art Center Theatre, 113 S. Montgomery St.

The film presents new solutions to the global problem of waste. Tickets are $12 and available through ojaifilmfestival.com. To learn more about the film and panelist visit ojaivalleygreencoalition.org.

Chuck and the “Secret Garden Dozen” had much to reminisce about

stuff secret gardenJazz radio legend Chuck Cecil calls Ventura his home

Chuck and Edna Cecil recently sat in with the “Secret Garden Dozen” a group of local professional musicians, who meet weekly in midtown Ventura  at A Secret Garden Florist Cafe on Main Street to talk music and life. The group has been playing music for over 500 years, most starting in high school and some in military bands. They all are still actively playing in many bands in the area.

stuff secret garden instOn occasion Breeze Publisher Sheldon and Alfred Lewis, who make the Breeze pretty joins them (by invitation only).

Venerable DJ and jazz guru 92 (or is it 93?) year old Chuck Cecil of Ventura has been on the air for 60 plus years, and is still going, but more slowly.

Although his show “The Swingin Years” is legendary among jazz lovers everywhere, WPPB in Long Island, N.Y. is the only station broadcasting his show. The show can be heard streaming on-line at http://peconicpublicbroadcasting.org Sundays from 5-9pm. The glory days of jazz has pasted but hopefully will return soon because many high schools have great jazz and swing bands.

He began as filler for an empty Saturday morning slot on Hollywood’s KFI station in 1956 and was later syndicated to more than 300 stations nationwide and broadcast internationally, to 240 ships and 170 military bases, by Armed Forces Radio Network.

Cecil has interviewed many of the greats of the jazz age including Tony Bennett, Harry James, Artie Shaw, Bing Crosby and Peggy Lee, just a few of the interviews he has conducted over the past 60 years.

He says that perhaps his funniest interview was Peggy Lee who he interviewed in bed (only her not him).

And he never interviewed Frank Sinatra but did shake his hand.

Ventura Family YMCA Sportsplex grand opening event and spooky Halloween

Get ready for 3 on 3 when Sportsplex is ready for play after grand opening

The Ventura Family YMCA is inviting the entire community to the grand opening of their outdoor Sportsplex and Children’s Corner area on Friday, November 6, from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.  The celebration kick-off begins with a ribbon cutting by the Ventura Chamber of Commerce and Ventura Mayor Cheryl Heitmann.  Other highlights include giveaways and activities for kids.  There will be introductory adult group trainings, the opportunity to meet with the Y’s instructors, and basketball competitions.  New members may also enjoy the Y for free from November 6th through November 13th!

For 128-years the Ventura Y has been a leading non-profit and community resource for Ventura.  The significance of the new Sportsplex is the Y’s response to the community’s need for more outdoor program and workout spaces.  The year and a half process will unveil a full-size basketball court, 4,000 sq. ft. in size, a workout area with Hampton Fitness equipment 1,700 sq. ft., and the Children’s Corner space expanding by 1,000 sq. ft. for kids to play outside.  Other highlights include high-tech synthetic flooring, open hours for all members to enjoy time outside, new high-intensity trainings, adult scrimmages, pickle ball, 3 on 3 basketball leagues, and even volleyball.

Numerous local companies have played a key role in making this project come to life.  One person who knows this process better than anyone else is the Ventura Y’s Facilities Director, Mike Evans, who has been leading this project since the beginning.

The Ventura Family YMCA is inviting all ghouls, goblins, princesses, and superheroes to join them for their annual Halloween Party at the Pacific View Mall!  The event is in the Center Court on October 31, from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. where children and their families will have fun trick-or-treating, participating in games, Minute to Win It competitions, crafts, face painting, raffle drawings, and a costume cat walk!  Registrations are not a requirement and children of all ages are welcome to participate whether or not they have a costume.

The Ventura Family YMCA’s Halloween Party is at the Pacific View Mall’s Center.  For more information about the Y visit ciymca.org/ventura or in person at 3760 Telegraph.  If you have you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please email Sherry Gutsch at [email protected] or call her at 642.2131 ext. 16.

Vol. 9, No. 2 – October 28 – November 10, 2015 – Ventura Music Scene

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder

By Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

I was happily surprised by the Kiefer Sutherland show Friday, October 23, at W20 at the Watermark. I not sure what I expected, nor why I would expect anything less from one of my favorite actors, but Kiefer was entertaining! The set was well received by his fans, some of which traveled quite a way to catch the show.  He offered up original rock songs to a few covers including one from Gordon Lightfoot. His band was tight and his gravely whiskey voice was spot on sexy as hell. I caught up with him after the show and he very happy with the response and the outpouring of support.  The man’s got talent.

Halloween is upon us and most venues will be pulling out the stops hoping to pack their joints by enticing revelers with decorations, costume contests, drink specials and of course music. From the Greek at the Harbor to the Star Lounge downtown, Ventura will be a happening place.  You can check the calendar listing here in the Breeze, or go to VenturaRocks.com for any additional updates. All the popular cover bands will be rockin’ all the popular places along with Candyland at Discovery, and Mandex with Pistols ‘n’ Pilez, deemed Ventura’s drunkest Guns and Roses tribute band as they perform the entire album “Appetite for Destruction.”

But to kick off Halloween you won’t want to miss the 50 Sticks of Dynamite CD release party for their latest release, “Carry Me Down to My Grave.” I snagged a copy when the boys joined me at CAPS Media for the pilot program of Ventura Rocks (air date to be announced soon).  They were the perfect band to kick off what we hope will be a popular feature at CAPS; and between you and me, I haven’t gotten the title track out of me head since we were in the studio…and that’s a good thing.

Polly and Steve Hoganson’s “Ones to Watch Productions” will be bringing Kinky Friedman to the Livery at the Improv Theater downtown Ventura for a show on December 4th. You know this show is going to be a hoot; Kinky was the one who originally said, “I support gay marriage. I believe they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us.”  He’s also quoted as saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.” If you have no sense of humor that you are aware of, or you’re easily offended, you might want to skip this one; otherwise, if you enjoy a quick wit, you’ll want to catch this iconic country singer; I hope you’ll help pack the joint and give him a well-deserved warm welcome.  For this and other shows including those at the Carpinteria Playhouse, go to OnesToWatchProductions.com.

Do you have any music related news or upcoming shows you want help publicizing?  Send all information short or long to  [email protected], and for updated music listings daily, go to www.VenturaRocks.com.

Health Insurance Information and Assistance

Agencies offer assistance with filling out forms, submitting bills, and completing other paperwork necessary for reimbursement

Case Management programs arrange for, and monitor the use of, community services to help the frail elderly, and/or disabled to avoid or delay institutional placement while fostering independent living. These services are offered by public, nonprofit, and for-profit agencies.

Case Management is the next step after contacting Information & Assistance.  Case Management may be needed when a person is released from the hospital after an illness or accident or a family caregiver is feeling overwhelmed or because a person would like to plan for future long term care needs.  A social worker and/or a nurse known as a “Case Manager” will meet with the client in their home for an assessment of their needs and available resources.

  1. After this meeting, a plan for service known as a “care plan” is created with the client’s input to address concerns, outline interventions, and specify who is responsible for each intervention.
  1. Then the Case Manager refers the client to community-based services, monitor those services, and provide monthly contacts & periodic home visits.
  1. The Case Manager also helps to solve problems that come up as the care plan is implemented.

Most Care Plan items are provided by family members, outside agencies, and as funding permits, purchased with funds provided by the State of California.

The Information and Assistance Program is provided under the guidelines of Title III B of the Older American’s Act and is designed to link persons aged 60 and above (and their families and caregivers), who are in need of assistance to the appropriate programs and services in their communities that can help solve the problems faced by older adults. This is considered the entry point/introduction to the services system network.

I & A Specialists assess the needs of the individual calling for services, link the caller to specific services, provide advocacy, and follow-up to see that the services were received. They can provide accurate, up-to-date program information and availability, eligibility criteria, and time to obtain services, both public and private. A specialist can provide guidance in coordinating existing resources to promote independence and quality of life.

Whether you are looking for a specific organization to address a concern, need a phone number of a particular program, require assistance in helping to identify problems, or require an advocate to ensure you or a loved one receives the services they need, the I & A staff can help you get answers. For more information call Information & Assistance Specialist 477-7300 or 1-(800) 510-2020 or submit a request for information below.
