The event consists of a 5k, 10k, and a free Kids Dash.

This event raises vital funds for the HACSB’S Scholarship Program, which provides six scholarships per year to residents of the HACSB’s public housing and affordable housing communities, and participants/household members of the Housing Choice Voucher Program who are attending/will be attending a four-year college/university, community college, or technical/vocational school in the fall.

Event Sponsors include Henderson & DeJohn, LLC, Pacific Western Bank, S.L. Leonard & Associates, Inc., and Southland Civil Engineering & Survey, LLP.

Hollywood

by Tony Rizzo

Two-time Oscar-winner Hilary Swank has been in Australia making “I Am Mother,” with Clara Rugaard. The film is about a teenage girl raised by a robot mother designed to repopulate Earth following an extinction event. Her recent film “55 Steps,” with Helena Bonham Carter and Jeffrey Tambor, premiered last month at The Toronto International Film Festival.

Matt Damon has been filming in California; New Orleans; Atlanta; Savannah, Georgia; and in Le Mans, France, for his latest film, “Ford v. Ferrari,” based on the book “Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans,” by A.J. Baime. The $100 million budget should ensure lots of racing action as he and Christian Bale compete for glory at Le Mans. The racing thrills hit screens June 28.

Shirley MacLaine, one of the last movie stars from the golden age of Hollywood, is still going strong at 84. She’s a four-time Oscar nominee, for “Irma La Deuce” (1964), as a director of “The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir” (1975), “The Turning Point” (1978) and “Terms of Endearment,” for which she won a best-supporting Oscar in 1984. Shirley recently did Netflix’s “The Little Mermaid,” with William Moseley (“The Chronicles of Narnia”), and has just completed the Disney Fantasy Christmas comedy “Noelle,” for Disney’s streaming service. Shirley has written umpteen books about her reincarnations, and if she’s lived before, she may have been through the studio system more than once!

Vol. 12, No. 2 – Oct 24 – Nov 6, 2018 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner

It’s hard to keep up with when and where all the Halloween parties are this year as venues have been mixing it up providing spooky fun not only the weekend before, but even a few weeks ahead of the actually day. Just know this, you most likely won’t be alone when dressing up on any given day leading up to Halloween. Just a couple of parties of note on Friday, October 26: there’s the annual Halloween Hoedown at Sans Souci with All-A-Blur, Hymen Blasters and more, Leashless has Kyle Rising, at the Keynote you’ll find Classic Rock with Crosscut 805 and Anchor and Bear will play a Halloween show performing the 1969 rooftop Beatles concert at Made West Brewing.

Moving on to Saturday, October 27, the Hong Kong Inn has music all day long starting at 1 pm with over a half dozen bands including Sin Chonies, Beers Brothers, and Hot Cuppa Three; the Darling Dames 3rd annual Halloween Bash will be at The Garage with Sick Boy and The Rip Katz, and The Barrelhouse Wailers will be the featured band for a Halloween “Spookeasy” swing dance party at the Ventura Beach Club.

And then on Sunday, Mick Stover presents a Gentlemen Blues Club production, Jumpin’ Jack Benny, at Grapes and Hops from 4-7 pm. You may know Mick as the bass player for Dive Bar Messiahs, well he’s super stoked to be bringing this award-winning act to Ventura for an afternoon of dancing to Rockin’ Blues, and yes, there will be a Halloween costume contest as well.

Halloween night? All bets are off. Get out, have fun and hopefully music will be involved.

Ambrosia by Caffrodite, recently located at 1987 E. Main Street in midtown Ventura, has launched a Friday night dinner and music weekly series for those who prefer organic Vegetarian and Vegan dinners with light music. Already lined up are Steve Williams, Greg Korzen and Brad Strickland.

Queen Nation returns to Ventura County for a show at Discovery on Friday, November 2, just in time to coincide with the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody in theaters the same day. I recommend you hold off on the movie, and see these guys live first.

Quick Notes: Doug Webb with Danny Carrey (Tool) play the Hong Kong Inn, Wednesday, October 24; Morrisey will play the Ventura Theater on Halloween night with Mazzy Star on the following evening; Tommy Marsh’s the Session this month will feature Mark Sells at Grapes and Hops on Thursday, November 1; and finally, the Ventura County Concert Band will hold their free annual Veteran’s concert featuring patriot music at the Ventura High School Auditorium on Sunday, November 4.

And finally, Mark Hartley tells me the Star Lounge is closed temporarily for just a remodel and cleanup. No need to worry they’ll be back before long with the patio being a part of the bar as well!

The homeless have rights

Did you know? In California, someone who is homeless may register to vote at a location they state is the place where they spend most of their time. The person must provide a description of the location that is clear enough for the elections official to establish that person’s right to vote in a particular precinct. This ensures accurate elections materials can be provided to this voter. In these instances, a mailing address needs to be provided (i.e. shelter or day center) in order for the voter to receive election materials.

The National Coalition for the Homeless has a few guidance documents for nonprofits to promote voter registration: http://nationalhomeless.org/campaigns/voting/

VLT awarded $10,000

Ventura Land Trust (VLT) was recently awarded $10,000 from Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) for Thomas Fire recovery activities at the Big Rock Preserve in Ventura.  VLT’s Big Rock Preserve, located off Highway 33 in the Ventura River watershed, was hard hit by the Thomas Fire, losing 85% of the more than 1,000 trees and plants the nonprofit had planted on the property. In addition, there was damage to trails, tools and wildlife habitat.

VLT will use the funding to replant many of the trees and plants that were burned in the Thomas Fire. For the past ten months, community volunteers have participated in restoration work days at Big Rock, on Saturday, Sept. 21, a group of Wells Fargo employees volunteered to water newly planted flowers and trees and spread mulch to help prevent the spread of invasive plants and keep the new plantings hydrated.

“We are very grateful for Wells Fargo’s support of our Thomas Fire recovery efforts,” said Derek Poultney, VLT Executive Director. “Thanks to financial help from companies like Wells Fargo, combined with the efforts of concerned community volunteers, there is lots of regrowth at Big Rock and the preserve is making a beautiful comeback.”

In March, 2018, Wells Fargo committed $800,000 to help in the recovery efforts related to the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslides. VLT is one of many nonprofit organizations that has benefited from the company’s commitment to rebuilding and revitalization in the region.

Ventura Land Trust (formerly Ventura Hillsides Conservancy) is dedicated to permanently preserving and protecting the land, water, wildlife, and scenic beauty of the Ventura region for current and future generations. Founded in 2003, the 501(C)(3) non-profit organization is supported by over 600 members, local businesses, and government partners. Ventura Land Trust manages 90 acres of land along the Ventura River and is negotiating the purchase of its first hillside property. Ventura Land Trust’s offices are located in the Poinsettia Pavilion, 3451 Foothill Rd.
